Just back from The Future of Online Media Distribution event at London’s South Bank. The session was headlined by Erik Huggers, the Beeb’s director of Future Media, and he came armed with a few juicy iPlayer metrics. Since launching last Christmas, the platform has received 250 million stream and download requests. September 2008 saw 22.8 million stream and download requests, an average of 759,000 a day – and interestingly, this month played host to the first 1 million daily requests. As far as individual programming is concerned, Eastenders can boast a linear audience of 18.9 million, with an additional 500,000 on iPlayer. And there’s a good demographic spread of viewers too - 43% of users are in 35-54 age range, 37% are in 15-34, and 21% are in 55+. Huggers believes that grey segment is down to ease of use of the service. And he has a commendable iPlayer mantra. “Keep it simple,” he says.
