As Swisscom continues to thrash out cooperation agreements on the rollout of fiber-to-the-home with a number of utility companies, three cable operators are preparing DOCSIS 3.0 launches, and two are trialing services via FTTH.

Swisscom and EWZ battle for Zurich

Swisscom launched trials over its own FTTH network in Zurich in April. Its rivals have long-said that its decision to invest heavily in FTTH now is a reaction to activity from the utility companies and the incumbent has conceded as much. Without the competitive pressures from the utility companies and its main rival Cablecom, it would have tried to maximize the investment from its VDSL network before moving to FTTH.

Moldova boasts a good choice of broadband offers – provided you live in the capital

The incumbent Moldtelecoms’ reluctance to give rivals access to its local loops has driven its competitors roll out their own fiber networks in Chisinau. Increased competition combined with tariff cuts of around 50% last year is fuelling subscriber growth and creating a competitive broadband environment in the capital.

Four? Two? One? Go? It’s not quite lift-off time for FTTH in Switzerland

To date fiber-to-the-home/building rollouts in Europe have been either operator-led (France, Finland, Slovenia) or muni/utility-led (Denmark, Norway, Sweden). The Dutch incumbent KPN has a foot in both camps following the recent approval of its joint venture with construction company Reggefiber.
Now Swisscom is proposing a model under which it would work with utility companies and operators through a variety of options from co-investment to resale.

Romania moots world’s most unpopular muni-fibre network

Like the gigabit granny, municipal fibre networks are one of the few human interest stories in the telecoms world. These super-fast broadband networks are often funded by local governments with utopian aims, and some have proved so popular that as many as 90% of residents within their coverage area have signed up for their services. It is surprising then that Bucharest’s proposed muni-fibre project NetCity, is causing such controversy.
