Verizon and AT&T Wireless unveil femtocells – and more coming

Verizon Wireless launched its Network Extender yesterday and a link appeared on the AT&T Wireless website for its new 3G Microcell. The operators weren’t the first out of the blocks given earlier launches by Sprint and Starhub, but the moves show that 2009 will be a year for femtocell launches despite the economic downturn.

A little bit of authoritarianism from a government can sometimes be a good thing – especially if it means getting your country’s telecoms industry in working order.
India is praised for being the world’s largest democracy, but there is little doubt that its admirable ethos of allowing every man to have a say on every issue – including critical regulatory ones – is holding back its telecoms market in many respects.

Not only has the firm won Iran’s third mobile license – and therefore become a player in one of the last major growth markets in the Middle East – but it has secured the right to be the only 3G operator in Iran for two years. Read more »

The last two years have seen mobile social networking and community based services and applications receiving growing attention and investment from the mobile industry.

In September 2008, Informa Telecoms & Media conducted the annual Mobile Content & Services Industry Survey. Of the 307 telecom industry professionals who participated in the survey, 71% believed that social networking & community services will have a significant impact on driving P2P uptake of mobile content.
