Plenty of plaudits for Nokia’s Comes With Music mobile music service which launches in the UK today. The biggest problem is that it’s barely mobile at all. To avoid users racking up hefty data charges on wireless networks, Nokia gets them downloading tracks to the PC for sideloading to the handset.

Nokia finds it easier to sell handsets than services – for now

Telefonica Moviles has become the first carrier to announce that it will be offering Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic phone, but it looks as if it will be doing so without the handset maker’s Comes With Music service.

The move will be a blow to Nokia because the Finnish vendor is trying to develop its service offerings in a bid to add incremental revenues to those already generated from selling handsets.

Telus and Bell hammer nail into the coffin of UMB

Telus and Bell Canada’s long-awaited decision to opt for LTE for its next generation technology almost certainly signals the end of Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB), the next generation of CDMA technology.

Bell and Telus, Canada’s second and third largest operators respectively, join a long list of CDMA operators that have opted for LTE over UMB, and their decision will probably force the hand of CDMA operators who have yet to commit to LTE to do just that.

Perhaps mobile operators should think “TV” and not just “Mobile TV”

Mobile operator Orange plans to launch a new service that includes a package of five cinema channels in France from November. The content on the channels will be available for viewing as live broadcasts as well as on-demand. Orange will license content from Warner Bros, Metro Goldwyn Mayer, HBO, Gaumont, BAC Films, Wild Side Films and Fidelite Film for this service.
